Northern Kruger Park

We use the term North Kruger to describe an area that contains the reserves the Manyeleti, The Timbavati and Thornybush. Each of these reserves contain a variety of luxury private lodges and tented camps where you can enjoy private safari experiences, consisting of off road driving, night drives, bush walks and much more. The Manyeleti, The Timbavati and Thornybush lie to the West of the famous Kruger National Park, and with the exception of Thornybush are ‘open’ to the Kruger Park, allowing the wildlife to roam freely. In previous years many of these reserves were hunting farms and cattle farms nd like the Sabi Sands to the South these reserves have gradually and methodically been returned to conservation. Refreshingly it is believed that currently in the area the head of cattle has been reduced to 300 and there are only 5 active hunting farms in the area.

Manyeleti Reserve
At 23 000 hectares the Manyeleti Reserve is sandwiched between the Sabi Sands to the South, the Timbavati to the North and the Kruger Park to the East. During the Apartheid Era it was the only game reserve that Non White people could visit, sad if you think that 2.2 million hectares was kept for the benefit of the whites. Nowadays the Kruger Park is open to everybody. The Mnisi Tribe made a successful land claim on the Manyeleti Reserve, and today own the land they are dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the reserve and harnessing its tourism potential. This well-managed eco-tourism venture benefits the surrounding communities. The lodges in the Manyeleti are privately owned and lease a concession of land within the reserve.

Timbavati
The Timbavati is 40,000 hectares and lies immediately to the west of the Orpen Gate and borders the Kruger National Park. Established in 1956 by conservation minded Game Farmers the Timbavati Game Reserve is most famous for its now sadly extinct White Lions, first sighted in 1976. Today this popular game reserve attracts many visitors wishing to view Africa’s Big Five and other exciting wild animals. The area is particularly noted for attracting large herds of Elephant and Buffalo, and for its large prides of Lions. Compared to the more famous Sabi Sands the Timbavati Game Reserve is a wilder and more adventurous safari experience. We frequently recommend combining a couple of nights in the Timbavati with a couple of nights in the Sabi Sands to give a complete and interesting safari experience. The game is more scarce and a little more challenging to find, however, once found, it can , give sightings that make the Sabi Sands look like a Zoo !

Thornybush
Thornybush is 11, 500 hectares and was proclaimed in 1979, and has since its exception tripled in size. The reserve is a fenced reserve and home to the Big Five. Many might argue that that the reserve should be incorporated into the surrounding reserve, others argue that by remaining a fenced reserve, the conservation and integrity of the wildlife is maintained. The reserve is home to the luxurious Thornybush Lodge and the famous Royal Malewane Lodge.
